Artists illustrate Smithfield Market nightlife
Depictions of life in Smithfield Market will be exhibited by artists at the Three Night Markets exhibition at City Hall in London this autumn.
The exhibition, running from 19 September to 16 October, will feature work from Xanthe Mosley, James Forshall, and Susan Henderson, who have created artworks featuring the nocturnal goings-on in the famous Smithfield, Billingsgate and New Covent Garden markets.
Mosley said: “I’m very grateful to the Mayor’s office for giving us the wonderful opportunity to show this work. For me, art is about people, and the market world gives me a constantly evolving source to work on. Catching a likeness as it moves and changes is a fascinating process. These industrial spaces, by night, are scenes normally hidden from the sleeping city and the everyday world.”
The three artists have spent many nights observing the unique world of the markets in London, and the show can be seen on weekdays between the aforementioned dates from 8.30am-6pm on the second-floor chamber lobby and café at City Hall.
