Lidgate recognised at Great Taste Awards

A Q Guild founder and shop owner, David Lidgate, has received a lifetime achievement award at this year’s Great Taste Awards, celebrating his 54-year career in butchery.

Meanwhile, Lidgate’s Butchers’ streaky bacon was judged to be within the top 50 products at the awards. “The fat literally melts in the mouth and we love the way the flavours develop,” remarked one judge. “The sweet, nutty notes of the Iberico pork have great length of flavour.”

Lidgate’s also received three stars, the highest grading of the awards. Sixth-generation butcher and David’s son Danny Lidgate commented on the shop’s achievements: “We were really pleased to win a three-star accolade this year and incredibly proud to be among the top 50. It reflects great credit on the entire Lidgate’s team.”

Q Guild general manager Sandy Boyd said: “Once again, our members have demonstrated they have got what it takes to win awards at the very highest level. We congratulate them all – and Lidgate’s in particular for its top 50 Great Taste coup this year.”

Meanwhile, entries remain open to all members for the Q Guild’s own butcher’s awards, the 2014 Smithfield Awards. The closing date is Monday, 29 September.
