Welsh sheep farmers to benefit from £1m technology scheme

Welsh sheep farmers are set to benefit from a £1 million Welsh government project, which will help them embrace technology and improve profits.

The Welsh Assembly’s deputy minister for farming and food Rebecca Evans announced the £970,000 scheme, which will be delivered by Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC), Meat Promotion Wales. It is being funded through European and Welsh Government support.

HCC said the project aimed to remove some of the barriers preventing farmers from using and adapting new technology, and help them to integrate technologies into their everyday farming practices to drive up efficiency and business performance.

HCC chief executive Gwyn Howells said: “We are looking forward to delivering this exciting new scheme which we believe will improve the efficiency and profitability of farm businesses. HCC’s priority is to develop and maintain a viable and sustainable future for farmers in Wales. I believe that projects such as this are a major step forward to achieve our ambitions for the entire industry.”

The project will be open to all registered sheep farming businesses in Wales with flocks greater than 100 ewes, which will be provided with information, training and support relating to electronic recording. After completing the scheme, businesses will qualify for a voucher to help towards the purchase costs of hardware and software. HCC said that the Welsh Government had funding available to support the first 1,500 successful applications.

Rebecca Evans said: “Improving business performance and enhancing IT skills in farming is a priority for the Welsh government. I am particularly pleased that this project has been developed in conjunction with people who are in the day-to-day business of farming. It is my intention that future Rural Development Programme projects are developed through this type of industry co-operation.”
