Pig scholarship applications increase

The Pig Industry Scholarship, facilitated by Bpex in conjunction with Harper Adams University, is gaining in popularity after receiving an increased number of applications in 2014.

Bpex reported that the scheme was going from strength to strength, with 47 student applications this year, up from 35 the previous year. Ten companies were involved in the applications in 2014.

Bpex skills development co-ordinator Sam Bowsher said: “Of those firms, six secured scholars for 2015 and an additional one chose to offer a placement opportunity for a second-year student. The pig industry scholarships are now well-established with both firms and students and they are all aware of the opportunities available.”

Participating companies give Harper Adams’ degree students a second-year scholarship of £3,500, with a minimum 12-month paid industrial placement. A final-year scholarship of £3,500 can also then be given. The programme aims to raise the profile of careers in the pig industry and encourage potential new entrants.

Bpex said the scholarships allowed companies to recruit high-calibre new employees; establish a relationship with students early in their studies; and conduct a ‘year-long interview’.
