Pork body puts focus on Asia

Bpex is looking to “open and develop” markets in Asia by attending a series of events in the continent in the coming months.

First up, the pig levy board recently attended an agricultural show in Assam, India, which is the country’s main pig-producing area. Bpex worked with the British Pig Association and UKTI at the event.

Bpex export manager Jean-Pierre Garnier said there was a pig symposium, and discussions with the minister in the north-eastern states. He called it “a toe in the water for all of us”.

Following this will be VIV Asia in March in Bangkok, Thailand, which involves pig genetics and technology. Next up is HOFEX in Hong Kong, where Bpex said it would be jointly present with Eblex in a large pavilion with a full programme of promotional events. The organisation will then go to Sial China in Shanghai in May, and is also planning a trade mission to Japan aimed at developing pork exports.

Garnier added: “We have a very busy time ahead as there are still many markets both to be opened and developed for pork.”
