Tulip wins top accolade at processing awards
The annual Meat and Poultry Processing Awards (MPPA) reached its finale last night at the Deansgate Hotel in Manchester, with Tulip crowned Processor of the Year 2015.
The sixth annual awards show, hosted by Meat Trades Journal editor, Ed Bedington, saw stalwarts from the processing sector enjoy a night of celebration.
Pork processor Tulip fought off competition to win the top prize, impressing judges with its 'field to fork initiative'.
"Its 'field to fork' approach to business has turned it into one of the UK's leading processors. Its devotion to both innovation and investment into its business has helped place it at the forefront of its trade, and its commitment to training and improving staff certainly helped catch the judges eye," said Bedington.
Steve Wood, operations director at Tulip, said winning the award was "extremely pleasing".
"There are a lot of people who put a lot of effort into Tulip over the last 12 months. The work that we have done with slow cooked products across a number of sites, and the investment we have put in to win this today is really pleasing.
"In combination with quite a lot of efforts we have put in surrounding environmental work and general improvement in the business - it's great to get the recognition."
Winner of Young Processor of the Year, Amy Poole, from North Country Quality Foods (NCQF) said it was really pleasing to see that all the finalists in her category were women, but that she was shocked to have won. When asked whether she finds it challenging working in a traditional male environment, she said it can be, however "once you have broken down the barriers, then they respect you a lot more".
Poole previously studied Food Technology, spending her placement year at NCQF, before joining the company full-time. She explained that although she had no intention of going into the meat industry at the beginning of her studies, she now believes it is the most interesting industry to work in. She is due to start a PhD next year and hopes to move into consultancy work in the future.

Bedington added that it was "heartening to see that there are so many great businesses in the sector, and it bodes very well for the future.
"I'd like to offer my congratulations to all our finalists - it's a great achievement to make it this far in this very tough competition and you're a credit to your companies and your trade".
