Pig health under scrutiny at Bpex event
The pig industry will look for new insights to safeguard pig health in the future at its annual Bpex Innovation Conference on 13 May.
Experts from horticulture, human medicine, and aquatics will join the pig sector at the event to “offer a glance into the future”. Bpex said the conference will provide the latest in science, management techniques and technologies for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pig disease.
It has been billed as a must for forward-thinking owners and farm managers, vets and allied industry, and will take place at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. Speakers include Charlie Purser from RFID and NFC consulting firm PureSpekt, Richard Riley from farming and pig genetics firm JSR, Neil Boonham from agri-food solutions specialist Fera, and Alison Wakeham, from the University of Worcester.
Wakeham, who will discuss novel diagnostics from the horticultural sector, said: “There are massive similarities, believe it or not, between growing cucumbers in greenhouses and growing pigs in ventilated buildings. For example, problems with disease coming in from outside, the need to clean effectively between batches to prevent cross-contamination and to identify infectious diseases promptly to reduce associated production problems.”
Bpex said there will also be smaller, informal break-out discussions during the day to hear from pig producers and researchers about technologies already being applied in industry, including the latest in precision farming, how the waste food industry is reducing odour and technologies for outdoor pigs.
The pig body added: “Overall, the conference aims to enable English pig businesses to investigate and adopt the most relevant innovations available, to help them grow their profitability and compete in the global marketplace.”
