Enjoy what’s left of barbecue season
A series of cooking demonstration videos have been released to assist butchers in taking advantage of barbecue trends, and to help families make the most of the remaining summer period.
The new self-help videos come from AHDB Beef & Lamb, which has joined forces with specialist barbecue chef Richard Holden.
“Here in the UK we are barbecuing more than ever,” explained Mike Richardson, AHDB Beef & Lamb’s independent retail sector manager.
“The average number of barbecues hosted by families each year has more than trebled over the past 10 years. In fact, last year the UK was crowned Europe’s leading barbecue nation. Barbecuing is now seen as a form of cooking in its own right, as well as an enjoyable social occasion. The rising popularity presents a huge opportunity for butchers, who can utilise these videos by showing their customers how to get the best out of their meat.”
The videos show Holden offering viewers advice on perfecting the nation’s favourite barbecuing meats, such as the classic beef burger and beef sirloin steak. He also demonstrates how to barbecue alternative products, like the thin-cut tender top steak and the flat iron steak. Tips on the correct temperature for different cuts are also detailed.
According to AHDB, the UK barbecue market was valued at £7 billion in 2013. This is up from £150 million in 1997.
“As the popularity of barbecuing continues to grow, so does the desire to try something new and innovative,” Richardson continued. “We wanted to show butchers and their customers there are a number of cuts out there, that aren’t typically associated with barbecuing, but work extremely well on the barbecue. These quick and clear videos will help demonstrate that.”
