First for Northern Irish beef
The inaugural Northern Ireland Beef Event, Beef NI Expo and Pedigree Calf Fair will take place on 14 November at the old Balmoral Belfast venue.
Its purpose is to bring together industry experts and producers of beef, providing an opportunity to network and attend seminars. Producers from the UK and Ireland will also judge the new model pedigree calf fair competition.
“We are delighted to have this opportunity to bring together the very best that Northern Ireland has to offer and promote the beef industry,” said event chairman David Connolly.
“We are delighted with the positive response from sponsors. We have already filled 60% of the trade space available at the event. We are also very excited by this response and look forward to welcoming businesses and visitors to the new event.”
The theme of the expo is ‘Beef Strategy 2020’ and is being run in partnership with the Livestock & Meat Commission and the National Beef Association (NBA).
Chris Mallon, chief executive of the NBA explained that “there is strength in numbers”, and those involved in the Northern Irish beef industry ought to work together to showcase their produce. “This is giving us the forum to have useful discussions about the future of our beef business, with a number of seminars to be hosted throughout the day.”
Although this may be the debut year for the event, key companies from within the industry have recognised the opportunity that this presents. Sponsors for the conference are Tesco, Bovipast RSP, Crystalax, HVS Animal Health and Isuzu Dealership.
In another first, 10 major beef breeds will come together to compete in the Pedigree Calf Fair. Aberdeen Angus, British Blue, British Blonde, Beef Shorthorn, Charolais, Hereford, Irish Moiled, Limousin, Salers and Simmental calves born from 1 September 2014 will be judged, with the winner going on to compete in the Champion in breed.
Additionally, young beef farmers are being encouraged to enter the young showmanship competition in an attempt to promote their livestock.
