Conwy butchers scoop 39 golds at North Wales awards
A total of 39 gold awards have been scooped by five Conwy butchers for their high quality meat products at a prestigious north Wales butchers awards organised by Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC) Meat Promotion Wales.
Edwards of Conwy went away with 17 gold awards as well as the cup for the best speciality lamb sausage and best barbecue product.
Next up was Cig y Llan, Cerrigydrudion who won a total of eight gold awards for their lamb and mint grillsticks, steak and kidney pie, beefburger, lamburger, sausage roll, chicken and ham pie, cottage pie and their Welsh faggots, peas and mash ready meal.
O E Metclafe of Llanrwst received seven gold awards for their traditional pork sausage, pork and leek sausage, pork and Welsh honey sausage, pork and caramalised onion sausage, pork pie, home cured bacon and gammon entries.
John Williams of Llanfairfechan received three gold awards for their pork and leek sausage, turkey and ham pie and their home cured bacon, while AL and RO Jones, Llanrwst, who won four gold awards for their beefburger, lamburger and porkburger entries and their pork, chestnut and apricot sausage.
Product entries from independent butcher from all over north Wales battled against each other in an intense competition for the 12 champion categories presented at this year's HCC North Wales Counties Innovation and Excellence in Meat Products, held at Venue Cymru, The Promenade, Llandudno.
Graham Titchener, HCC's marketing executive, said: "The quality of the north Wales entries were of a very high standard. The event showed the depth of creativity, innovation and quality in the sector, which is keeping the north Wales butchers ahead when it comes to meeting consumer requirements."
Top judges were recruited from all over the UK to sample the speciality sausages, pies, burgers, ready meals and home cured bacon and gammon entered from the length and breadth of north Wales.
Overall 144 gold awards were issued on the night with a number of butchers from all over north Wales taking home several gold, silver and bronze awards.
Category winners were presented with a cup or plaque for shop display by the competition's sponsors - HCC, WR Wright and Sons, Lucas Ingredients, South England Pastries and Filmor D&E.
The south Wales heat will be held at the Tower Hotel, Swansea on Wednesday 25 April.
Category winners from both events will be invited to submit their respective product/s for consideration in the HCC-organised Wales Champion title to be held later in the year.
