Workshops boost industry awareness

A series of courses have helped increase the red meat industry’s knowledge of shopper preferences and abattoir operations. 

Over the past 12 months, nearly 400 industry delegates attended the carcase classification courses, hosted by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC), at abattoirs across Wales.

Feedback from the 35 specialist workshops suggested that the programmes were deemed a success.

Carcase viewing and grading, current abattoir and consumer requirements and animal health and welfare were all topics of discussion during the courses. Breaking down the barriers between farmers and processors by discussing retail requirements was also a point of focus during the programmes.

“HCC is very pleased that the formal feedback we undertake shows the selection or slaughter courses have been so very well received,” explained Luned Evans, industry development officer at HCC.

“It shows that participants reckoned their specialist knowledge increased during the visit by between 30% and 50%.

“None of us can control the global factors that have had serious impacts on lamb prices in the last 12 months, but these courses show that farmers can fight back and maximise the value of each animal by meeting consumer preferences.”

Although courses are mainly orientated around the lamb market, beef and pork events are also being scheduled. Anybody wishing to attend a new round of events beginning in May have been encouraged to contact HCC.
