Smith replaces Howard at Danish trade body
Robert Smith is replacing John Howard as market director at the Danish Agricultural and Food Council in the UK in June, with Howard set to retire shortly.
Smith, who takes up his role on June 1, has enjoyed a long and varied career in the UK food market and is particularly well known in the pork and bacon industry, where most of his new responsibilities will lie.
For the last two years, he has managed his own marketing consultancy, Blue Fish Marketing, and before that held senior marketing and communication roles at Vion Foods and the Dutch Meat Board. His marketing career began in the dairy industry with the National Dairy Council.
Howard is retiring after 30 years in Denmark's meat industry, having established the Danish Bacon & Meat Council (DBMC) in its Kingston office in 1985. The DBMC was merged into the Danish Agriculture & Food Council in 2009. Before joining DBMC, John also held a number of marketing positions in the UK dairy industry.
“I am delighted to be handing over the reins to Robert Smith, who is well known and respected in our trade,” said Howard.
“The breadth of his experience makes him an ideal choice to help meet the many challenges facing our trade and I know he’ll be an excellent ambassador for Denmark in a vital export market for the whole of the Danish food and farming industry.”
Smith added: “The Danish Agriculture and Food Council is widely recognised as an authoritative, professional organisation, and I am genuinely excited to be joining the team and to meeting the many challenges to come.
“One of the first challenges will be to pick up the reins from John Howard who is a much-liked and highly respected figure in the industry.”
