A traditional homemade black pudding stole the show at the latest Product Evaluation Event and Regional Roadshow for butchers, which took place in Dawlish, Devon, last month.
Organised by the British Pig Executive (BPEX), the event saw 22 butchers arrive armed with 137 products for evaluation. It was, however, the champion of one of the new categories for the season - Black Pudding - that went away with the prized title of Overall Champion.
Shaun Vining of Complete Meats of Axminster was delighted that his traditional black pudding with a few extra 'special' ingredients was so highly thought of by the judges.
He said: "Our black pudding has always been well received by customers so when we saw there was a new evaluation category we decided to put it to the test."
Shaun also triumphed in the Lamb or Beef Sausage category with a newly devised 'Lamb, Tomato and Basil Sausage'. Developed after a request from a catering customer, the new lamb sausage was praised by judges and following its success, will go on sale in the shop.
Shaun said: "The roadshows really are a good way to benchmark products and being able to promote them as regional award winners in the shop is good for business but also reassuring to our customers."
Other category champions were Barleymow's Farm Shop from Somerset and T Buttling from Dorset.
