Industry prepares for Love Lamb Week

As Love Lamb Week gets underway tomorrow (Thursday, 1 September) industry bodies are preparing to take part and promote lamb as a versatile and simple dish to cook.

Shoppers at Forbes Farm Fresh at Inverness Farmers Market will be able to try hot Scotch Lamb rolls on Saturday, 3 September courtesy of local producers as part of the campaign.

Farmers and crofters are rightly proud of what they produce, and events like these provide a great platform for us to speak to shoppers and show the passion we have for putting food onto our nations tables, explained National Farmers Union (NFU) Scotlands highland regional manager, Ian Wilson.

At this time of year, Scotch lamb is at its tastiest and most plentiful. This is a chance for people to try Scotch lamb and support Scottish farmers by buying our produce.

I urge any sheep farmers who would like to get involved to get in touch. Past experience has always seen us get a great response from shoppers who really appreciate finding out more about how their food is produced from those hard-working farmers and crofters who are at the very beginning of this iconic Scottish food chain.

Meanwhile in Ireland, the Ulster Farmers Union (UFU) is also encouraging local consumers to enjoy local lamb as part of the campaign.

Northern Ireland produces some of the best quality lamb and it is recognised as such, particularly in export markets, said UFU hill farming chairman Ian Buchanan. However, here at home lamb is often overlooked for other types of meat. We want to see that change.

The UFU will be at Belfast City Hall on Tuesday, 6 September supplying freshly made free samples of lamb dishes, including a lamb curry and easy lamb pitta pockets.

Consumers are increasingly interested in provenance and buying local, added UFU beef and lamb chairman Crosby Cleland. Since sheep are a fundamental part of Northern Irelands agri-food industry, eating lamb is an excellent and tasty way to support local farmers.

Industry and consumers alike are being encouraged to support the campaign on social media by using the hashtag #LoveLambWeek.
