Waitrose launches bacon trifle

Unconventional chef Heston Blumenthal has teamed up with Waitrose to introduce a Banana and Bacon Trifle just in time for Christmas.

Layers of banana, caramel, chocolate and rum are topped up with smoky bacon bits to create the unusual dessert.

Blumenthal said that he drew inspiration for this meaty pudding from his childhood memories. “When I was a kid, I remember eating a bacon and banana sandwich during one of my holidays,” he said. “I loved how you wouldn’t normally think of putting those two flavours together, but they just worked so well. I can’t wait to hear about people’s reactions when they see and taste this fantastic dessert at their Christmas dinner table – it’ll definitely be a talking point.”

As well as coming with a sachet of bacon pieces for customers to add themselves, the cream is smoky bacon flavoured.

“We’ve loved working with Heston to create a truly special trifle with a real sense of humour,” added Aileen Wood, Waitrose dessert buyer. “His range of products at Waitrose often works with classic dishes he loved as a child, and this trifle is no exception. The bacon twist works incredibly well with the rest of the ingredients and fits perfectly into Heston’s innovative range of Christmas sweet treats.”

The trifle will initially be launched in packs of two mini-trifles as part of a meal deal for consumers to try before having the option of buying the larger version.
