New awards unveiled by British Poultry Council
A new competition to recognise the entire poultry industry has been announced by the British Poultry Council.
Formerly the British Turkey Awards, the newly launched British Poultry Awards will cover the entire poultry industry. They are designed to provide a platform for those involved in agricultural and manufacturing areas of the poultry industry to be recognised and rewarded for producing the very best retailer and foodservice products.
There will be 13 categories in the new competition, which covers the retail and foodservice sectors. Entries are expected to include the latest in innovation and choice across seasonal summer and Christmas product ranges.
The shortlisted products will be assessed by an independent panel of judges against set criteria – such as taste, appearance, quality and packaging – and demonstrate the best use of the protein for the target market.
The Student Chef of the Year competition is also part of the awards, with young catering students competing to create the best turkey starter or turkey main course, to be served at the awards ceremony, taking place at The Sheraton Grand Park Lane Hotel in London on 14 September.
Richard Griffiths, chief executive of the British Poultry Council, said: “We are really excited about the step-change taking place this year. The British Turkey Awards was great for raising the profile of turkey cuts and joints as a mainstream meat for the weekly shop, but we feel now is the time to extend this opportunity to highlight other types of bird that are being produced right here. With the support of the retailers, we fully expect this to be the biggest and best event in the calendar for the poultry industry.”
