Queen recognises food industry in birthday honours

Several members across the meat, animal welfare, and agriculture sectors have been awarded for their services to the food industry in the Queen’s Birthday Honours this weekend. 

Quality Meat Scotland’s (QMS) chairman Jim McLaren, who is also a farmer in Perthshire, was awarded with an MBE for his services to the farming industry in Scotland.

“It has been a huge privilege for me to have worked in, and for, the Scottish agricultural industry in the various roles I have undertaken to date,” McLaren said of his honour.

“I am immensely proud of our industry and particularly of the people, the length and breadth of our country, who dedicate their lives to producing safe, nutritious food in a way which enriches Scotland’s environment.

“It is the passion, dedication and innovation of those who work in our industry which has resulted in Scotland’s larder - and brands such as Scotch Beef PGI, Scotch Lamb PGI and Specially Selected Pork - earning a global reputation for quality.”

William James Campbell, from Co Down, was also given an MBE for his contribution to the agriculture sector.  

Meanwhile, Dr Carl Michael O’Brien, chief fisheries science adviser at the Center for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) was given a CBE for services to the management of internationally shared fisheries.

Those that were the recipients of OBE’s included: professor Michael Appleby, chief scientific adviser for World Animal Protection for his services to animal welfare; Professor Elizabeth Green from the University of Warwick for her services to health and welfare of farmed livestock; and Catherine McCallum, from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, who was awarded for her services to government and the community.

Malcolm Walker CBE, chief executive of Iceland Frozen Food, added to his titles after being awarded with a knighthood. Noor Jahan Ali, senior buying manager for Morrisons’ World Foods category was made a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire for her services to diversity in the retail industry.
