Britain’s best bacon butty formula revealed

The secret to making the perfect bacon butty is out, according to IronmongeryDirect. 

Research from the online trade service revealed that Britain’s favourite bacon sandwich is made from three slices of smoked bacon on a white bread roll with brown sauce.

A little under half (44%) of the survey’s participants opted for brown sauce, compared to 36% who favoured ketchup. Meanwhile, 11% of the 2.014 UK adults surveyed would rather eat their sandwich without sauce, and 4% chose barbecue sauce over other options.

Twenty-four percent preferred to have their bread toasted, and 43% would butter their bread before filling their sandwich.

“We all agree that a bacon butty is a great way to start the day. However, what we put in it is always up for debate,” said Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director of IronmongeryDirect.

“Reviewing the findings of our research proves how passionate we are about the great British breakfast staple, and how constructing it is a fine art.”

There also seems to be a geographical divide when it comes to naming the meal. According to the survey, people in the south refer to their bacon sandwich as a bacon bap or roll, while people in the Midlands call it a cob. Meanwhile, those in the north west refer to it as a barm. Elsewhere, people in Scotland call it a bridie, buttery or rowie with 53% of people north of the border favouring sliced white bread over the 48% that would opt for a roll.
