Breakfast literally means breaking the overnight fast, which has occurred during sleep. People who eat breakfast often have a more balanced diet and tend to have better levels of concentration. They are also less likely to snack on high-calorie foods and thus tend to be slimmer, and they may have a more buoyant mood. Despite these important aspects of eating breakfast, between 10-33% of people miss breakfast. This is particularly worrying for children and teenagers at school as it can have an impact on their ability to learn and, for this reason, many schools have introduced 'breakfast clubs', where a breakfast can be purchased at an economical price. Anyone who is trying to lose weight will know that well-balanced slimming diets strongly advocate breakfast. While many people will be content to eat cereal, milk or toast for breakfast, a cooked breakfast based on bacon or sausages can be a useful way of enabling those who miss out on breakfast to eat this important meal. A breakfast including lean back bacon, which has been grilled, can provide an appetising start to the day. Bacon can be served with eggs, baked beans and grilled mushrooms and tomatoes and bread as a traditional type of breakfast. For others, a sandwich of grilled bacon with slices of tomatoes can be an easily eaten hand-held alternative. Sausages can be used as an alternative or as well as the bacon. Again, it is best to grill or microwave rather than fry these. Such cooked breakfasts can be particularly tempting for those with toddlers with a poor appetite as such items encourage them to eat.
