Tristan Meier steals the show

A young sausage-maker stole the show at the South West BPEX Butcher Roadshow and Product Evaluation.

Tristan Meier, from H Dayus Family Butchers, was crowned Overall Champion for his 'Pork, Honey and Wholegrain Mustard' sausage, which also won him the title of champion Young Sausage Maker.

The youngster created the sausage last April and has already won one other competition with it. He said: "I couldn't believe it when I first got the call from Craig, the boss. I had been left to man the shop, so had no idea what was happening at the event.

"I must admit that I get a real buzz from knowing my products do well and it encourages me to want to enter more evaluations, which I will do in the New Year. The pressure will really be on then, though, to keep the title!"

Haymans Butchers was also successful, scooping three category champion titles. The shop's 'Dry Cured Green Back Bacon' actually scored 99 out of 100 with the judges. Stewart Hayman said: "We are very pleased! To come away with three category champion results is fantastic and will show our customers that we are committed to making quality products."

Devon butcher's C & H Baker & Sons took home the 'Meatballs and Faggots' and 'Ready Meal' champion titles, as well as an array of gold, silver and bronze awards.
