New guide to salmon and turkey standards
Published:  21 December, 2010

Two animal welfare organisations have launched a new guide to the welfare standards in farm assured salmon and turkey.

Compassion in World Farming and OneKind have developed the guide in time for Christmas when sales of the two products increase. The report is available online and will be published in further detail in the New Year.

It ranks food assurance schemes from bronze, meaning acceptable, to gold, the highest in animal welfare standards.

For turkeys, the systems performing best in the research are the organic standards of the Soil Association and the Scottish Organic Producers Association and the RSPCA freed Food Indoor and Free Labels.

For farmed salmon, the systems performing best are the Organic Soil Association standards and the RSPCA Freedom Food labels.
