Morrisons brings home the bacon

Bacon Connoisseurs’ Week has got off to a flying start, with Morrisons’ ‘Butchers Style Ayrshire Middle Bacon’ taking home the title of Britain’s best bacon.

The supermarket was one of 12 winners in the Bpex ‘Savour Your Bacon’ competition, launched in support of the promotional week. The contest was open to multiple retailers, butchers, processors and foodservice operators.

The competition saw more than 250 entries submitted across three categories – Smoked, Unsmoked and Speciality – and it was judged by a panel of experts. As well as being awarded winner of the multiple retailer section, Morrisons also went onto pick up the National Champion title.

Claire McGoran from Morrisons collected the award. She said: “It is an honour to be represented in this national competition and win this prestigious award. It is a wonderful testament to the quality of the bacon we produce.”

The Morrisons product, taken from a traditional cut and produced by Vion, was praised by judges for its classic flavour and stood out from the record-breaking number of entries.

All 12 winners attended a special ceremony at the Bleeding Heart Restaurant in London yesterday (21 March) to receive their awards from wine connoisseur and bacon-lover Oz Clarke.

The Overall winners were:
•    Multiple Retailer and National Champion: Morrisons with ‘Butcher’s Style Ayrshire Middle Bacon’
•    Independent Butcher: Cranston’s Quality Butchers with ‘Dry Cured Back Bacon’
•    Foodservice Supplier: Lakes Speciality Foods with ‘Pancetta Bacon’
•    Brands: Vion – Case & Sons with ‘Smoked Wiltshire Cure Thick Cut Bacon’

Nick Hannam, commercial director for Case & Son’s, said: “Our Wiltshire Cure is based on an age-old recipe and we are delighted that it has received such expert recognition.”

Bacon Connoisseurs’ Week continues until Sunday 27 March, and sees butchers, retailers and the foodservice sector undertake special promotions and celebratory events to promote their ranges of quality bacon.
