Selby butcher crowned Bpex national champion

A Selby butcher was crowned national champion at the Bpex Regional Roadshow final at Butcher’s Hall this week.

JA Mounfield & Son won the national title after its 1lb traditional pork pie triumphed at the North Eastern heat in Harrogate. James Mounfield and Tristan Jackson of JA Mounfield and Son were presented with an original watercolour of a Gloucester Old Spot pig by British wildlife artist Chris Pendleton, by past master of the Worshipful Company of Butchers John Brewster, and Bpex’s Keith Fisher.

The team had almost missed the regional event as a result of a power cut, but they went on to scoop the national prize.

David Mounfield of JA Mounfield & Son said: “We are absolutely over the moon. We make the pie from scratch to a traditional recipe and it has always been popular.”

“We’re a family run business and our success is down to a great team effort, plus we only ever use the best ingredients. Our meat is sourced from local farmers and we have our own abattoir on site, so we have strict control over quality at all times. We take pride in producing consistently good food, without compromise. Both the pie and the wonderful painting will now take pride of place in the shop.”

Keith Fisher, BPEX butchery and product development manager, said: “This has been an exciting culmination of another incredibly successful year for the BPEX butcher roadshow. We saw hundreds of butchers on our travels around the country and an extraordinary amount of top quality products come through for evaluation. The seven regional champions here today have achieved something to be very proud of, but as we all know there can only be one national Champion.

“The aim of the roadshow and product evaluation events is to demonstrate product excellence and of course, the quality, service and skill that is present on our high streets and in farm shops. Certainly, the judges tell us that the products are getting better and better, and the level of innovation is outstanding.”

The other regional champions included Bradwell Butchery, Bakery & Delicatessen in Norfolk, (East Anglia Champion), Bromley Butchers of Wolverhampton (West Midlands Champion), Devon-based Complete Meats (South West Champion), J W Mettrick & Sons of Glossop (North West Champion), Mellors Farm Butchers in Newark (East Midlands Champion) and Christopher Cripps c/o Greens of Pangbourne in Berkshire (South of England Champion), who won the young sausage makers category.
