Allan Bennett triumphs at Bpex roadshow

Codsall butcher Allan Bennett won a clutch of awards – including the Overall Champion title – at the Bpex Roadshow at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern on 22 February.

The well-known butcher and judge claimed 13 gold and 3 silver awards for products, as well as four category champion titles and the Overall Champion title for his ‘Fine Cut Pork Sausage’ in the Traditional Pork Sausage category.

Allan said: “It was a great team effort and everyone at the shop is thrilled with the results. It takes a lot of effort and time to do, but given this is so close to home, it is an important event that I really don’t like to miss.

“We’ve always done well with pies and sausages, but don’t usually enter the Black Pudding category, so this was a real bonus. I tried our latest batch and it was particularly delicious, so decided to put it forward. I know I’m biased but I’ve not tasted any that quite compares, so I knew it was in with a good chance.

“At the end of the day, it’s down to the detail; a lot of care, attention, time and effort is required. But the rewards are worth it to keep the high street butchery trade alive.”

Bpex butchery and product development manager Keith Fisher said: “This was a great show with more than 180 products received from butchers and farm shops for evaluation. The standards were excellent, with almost all of the products receiving a gold, silver or bronze award – which clearly shows that butchers in the region produce some of the best meat products around.

The next Bpex Roadshow will be at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on Wednesday 7 March.
