ABP takes green award

A leading beef processor is celebrating after scooping a top green award for one of its operations.

ABP won a Green Apple award at a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament this week in recognition of the work it had carried out on water efficiency at its Sturminster Newton plant in Dorset.

The company took over the processing operation in 2009 and said it had invested in an extensive modernisation programme, which included a major project to reduce water use, including monitoring and the installation of a reverse osmosis system for reusing and recycling of water.

Tom Kirwan, managing director of ABP UK, said: "This is a great achievement for ABP UK and the Sturminster Newton site in particular. It is always nice to receive independent recognition for the hard work carried out by our team, especially when this work is focused on addressing a key sustainability issue for the meat industry.

"All industries have a responsibility to manage water sustainably and we believe the work we have carried out to reduce water use has made a small but important contribution."
