Offal pie wins innovation award

An offal pie has helped students from Harper Adams University scoop a gold in the UK finals of an EU eco-innovation food product competition.

The team of nine, named More Than Meat Pies, won the British heat of the competition Ecotrophelia: European Food Innovation Student Awards with its offal pie ready meal, named ‘A Hearty Meal’. Now the team will compete against 15 other countries in the European leg of the competition, which will be held in Germany in October.

Accepting the award for the UK team was Natalie Saxton, who is in her third year of a BSC Food, Nutrition and Wellbeing degree at Harper Adams. She said: “We are delighted to win the gold prize. It’s been an amazing experience. One of the best things has been working as a team to bring everyone’s creative ideas together in one product. The judges have been really supportive and we are now looking forward to the European finals.”

Meanwhile professor Margaret Patterson, who is on the judging panel, said: “The judges were all impressed by the excellent standard of the entries. The hard work and creativity of the students was evident. These young food scientists and technologists should be a real asset to the future of our profession.”
