Meat firms take two top agri awards

Two meat firms have taken the top agri-business accolades at an annual awards show celebrating the best in Northern Ireland food and farming.

Exporter Elmgrove Foods was named Best Agri-Food Company of 2013 at the awards, which are organised by Farming Life and sponsored by Danske bank, while meat processor Hannan Meats was awarded Best Small Agri-Food Business 2013.

Elmgrove – a former winner of the export initiative in MTJ’s Meat and Poultry Processing Awards – exports beef, lamb and pork fifth-quarter products to the Far East, Africa and Europe. Founded in 2008, the company has introduced over 90 products to the global market and is exporting 12,900 tonnes per year, achieving £10.7m sales for year ended March 2012.

Moria-based Hannan operates the world’s biggest salt-ageing chamber and had a record five products listed in the Top 50 Foods list of the Great Taste Awards 2013. The company was awarded a total of 44 gold stars at this year’s awards, and won the Supreme Champion Award last year for its Italian-style guanciale.
