Bay City Rollers singer to judge Scotch pie

The lead singer of Bay City Rollers Les McKeown is due to guest-judge the World Scotch Pie Championships on 13 November.

Supported by the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders and Scottish Bakers, the championship will see bakers and butchers entering their best pies, sausage rolls, bridies, speciality savouries and Scottish football pies.

McKeown, famous for his 1970s hits Bye Bye Baby, Shang A Lang and Give a Little Love, said: “We love a great pie and always stock up when we are on home ground. Touring non-stop around the world means we need to keep our strength up, so we always say ’aye to a pie.

“Being invited to judge the best of the best, though, is a huge honour. I am already in preparation and plan to eat nothing for 24 hours before the big day, so I can enjoy every bite of Scotland’s best.”

Butchers and bakers will have the opportunity to become world-winning champions of the categories, and the ultimate winner of the Scotch pie category will receive the title of World Champion.

Chief executive of Scottish Bakers Alan Clarke commented on McKeown’s presence and said: “They are an iconic Scottish band and the Scotch pie is an iconic Scottish product. We are delighted to announce that Les will join our group of professional judges this year to select the best pies in the land.”

The championship is running for the 15th year and takes place at the Carnegie Conference Centre in Dunfermline.
