Champion banger sought

The best banger in the UK is set to be revealed at MTJ's presitigious Champion of Champions competition, which this year is set to take place on 15 October.

Award winning butchers and champion sausage makers from around the UK will be facing off against each at Butcher's Hall, London, to find out who will be crowned Champion of Champions.

This year, MTJ has teamed up with British Sausage Week, which runs from 15-21 October. The week will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and will feature a host of sausage themed events to celebrate.

Champion of Champions, organised by MTJ and sponsored by Lucas Ingredients and BPEX, is open to anyone in the trade who has been declared a champion in one of the UK's many regional sausage evaluations and competitions.

Noel Dawson, retail development manager with Lucas Ingredients, said: "Lucas is dedicated to supporting butchers and we're proud to continue our sponsorship in 2007. With the launch of a number of new sausage mixes this year, the Champion of Champions category is particularly apt for us."

Butchers and sausage makers are eligible to enter if they have won a regional competition anytime between 1 April 2006 and 30 June, 2007.

Teaming up with BPEX and its annual British Sausage Week will give finalists and the ultimate champion plenty of opportunity to get their sausages a mention in the mainstream media and boost their products sales.

Last year's Champion of Champions winner. Craig Rollinson of Hinchliffe' Farm Shop in Huddersfield. saw the sales of his prize-winning pork, mature cheddar cheese and chive sausage double and other varieties grow.

This year's champion will be announced on stage at Butcher's Hall by cricketing legend Phil Tufnell, who is supporting British Sausage Week and all finalists will be presented with their special certificates on the day.

Meanwhile, British Sausage Week will focus consumer attention on the humble sausage and will feature a number of sausage themed events, with Phil donning his new crown as 'King of the Sizzle' and touring the country and speaking to consumers to find the best birthday banger to mark the week's 10th anniversary.
