The two teams, led by the UK Ambassador to Italy Edward Chaplin and the British Consul General in Milan, Peter Carter, cooked the English steaks at the event which was organised by the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX).

Each of the teams also included a number of the journalists while the end products were judged by a team which included EBLEX head of marketing Andrew Garvey and Carlo Cracco, a two-star Michelin chef.

Winners of the contest, which was the opening event in the new "Perfect Steak Campaign" being launched in Italy by EBLEX, was the team led by the Ambassador.

Andrew Garvey, said: "It was an excellent contest carried out in a very friendly and happy atmosphere.

"It was the perfect start for our "Perfect Steak" campaign which is aimed at promoting prime English beef to caterers and supermarkets across Italy which is the number one destination for those meat exports."
