Week extension for BSOTY entries

Butchers are still in with a chance of being named 2012 Butcher's Shop of the Year, with the entry deadline extended by a week to 11 August.

The event, organised by Meat Trades Journal, aims to celebrate everything that is great about the UK's independent retail butchery trade, seeking out the best of the best across the country.

Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, said: "These awards are always extremely popular. Simply entering the awards can give you a chance to pause and assess your operation. Getting through to the finals is also a great PR story to tell your customers and pick up new business."

The competition covers butchers' shops up and down the country, with the winner in each region going head to head to reveal the ultimate best shop in the UK. Other national awards include Farmshop of the Year, Butcher's Plus, which looks at larger operations, Halal Butcher's Shop of the Year, and the ever-popular Young Butcher of the Year award.

Last year's competition saw Davidsons Specialist Butchers from Inverurie, take the overall title. At the time, owner John Davidson said: "I've wanted this since before I even had a butcher's shop. Being named best butcher in the UK is a great marketing tool."

The contest is sponsored by Eblex, Bpex, Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales, Weddel Swift & Harmony Farm, Lucas Ingredients, Verstegen Sauces & Spices, Tican Chilled, the Meat Training Council and Quality Meat Scotland's Scotch Butchers' Club. Entry forms can be downloaded from www.meatinfo.co.uk. The deadline is 3 August, and the awards lunch will be held on 22 November at the five-star London Landmark Hotel.
