Welfare highlighted at Eblex event

The Young European Meat Committee (YEMCO) focused on the demand for high-welfare meat in Europe, and the importance of imported products being of the same standard as European.

The event, hosted by Eblex in the UK on 10-11 May, saw 60 delegates attending. Andrea Gavinelli, head of the Animal Welfare Unit at the European Commission made the keynote speech, which focused on morally- and socially-conscious meat producers and the need to maintain welfare standards.

Dr Phil Hadley, southern senior regional manager at Eblex, said: “The event proved to be incredibly popular. Importantly, it underlined the fact that European consumers demand high-welfare products – a demand that producers are moving heaven and earth to satisfy.”
“It also provided the ideal forum for young executives and managers from European companies involved in the meat and livestock industry to discuss issues affecting the sector,” he added.
