Businesses celebrate National Butchers’ Week

To celebrate the seventh annual National Butchers’ Week (NBW), taking place this week (24-30 March) butchers across the country are reaching out to their local communities, offering promotions and competitions.

Organised by Meat Trade Journal, NBW has embraced the digital age, with many butchers following suit using the hashtag #NationalButchersWeek. In Telford, G N Badley & Sons has developed an online ordering app: “We have created a new app to help us trace meat and also a new series of meat boxes that can be delivered to people’s homes,” explained Kay Bradley, co-owner G N Badley & Sons.

The business will also be celebrating its 38-year anniversary to coincide with NBW. “National Butchers’ Week is a great chance to champion the importance of local family butchers that you can rely on. It is a huge bonus that this coincides with our business anniversary,” Badley added.

Blackburn College has teamed up with local farm, Wellbeing Farm, to offer its catering students the chance to make their own sausages during NBW: “The winning sausage will be sold in Whiteheads Butchers, which has been trading for 128 years,” explained Celia Gaze, marketing director at Wellbeing Farm.

Other butchers are cutting prices across a range of products. The Farmers Cart, York, is matching supermarket prices with a £3-for-two offer on their own sausages, pork chops, homemade burgers and bacon loin chops. Similarly, Macbeth’s Butcher, Moray, is offering 10% off orders placed on its website this week.

Some businesses have opted to hold competitions to generate local interest, such as Wigan-based England and Sons. Manager Nicole Taylor said: “For National Butchers’ Week we are offering our customers a chance to win £25 meat voucher by entering our ‘Guess our Meat quiz’. There are 10 pictures of different cuts of meat and our customers have to guess which cut they think they are. The customers who get the answers all correct go in the draw with the chance to win.”
