Hunt on for best butcher’s shop

The search is under way for the UK’s best butchery business, with Meat Trades Journal urging butchers throughout the country to step up and be in with a chance of taking home the ultimate accolade.

The Butcher’s Shop of the Year Awards 2014 will seek out the best butcher’s and farm shops throughout the UK, as well as recognising rising stars within the industry, and culminates in a hotly contested awards lunch in London in November.

Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, said: “These awards are designed to celebrate everything that is great about the independent retail butchery trade. There are some superb businesses out there, and we want to see all of them coming into these awards.

“Not only do those making it through to the final get some highly valuable recognition and promotional opportunities, but it also helps to create a buzz around the wider trade, and allows us to demonstrate the renaissance in butchery throughout the country.”

The competition covers butcher’s shops up and down the country, with the winner in each region going head-to-head to pick out the best shop in the UK. On top of this, there are also national awards for Farm Shop of the Year, Halal Butcher’s Shop of the Year, Butcher’s Plus, looking at larger operations, and the ever-popular Young Butcher of the Year.

This year will also see the continuation of last year’s new category, New Business of the Year, aimed at recognising a newly established butchery business, set up within the past two years. Bedington added: “The butchery sector is seeing renewed focus, with consumers still looking to the independent sector as disillusionment grows around the multiples. It has never been a better time to get into butchery and we want to encourage, recognise and reward that with this category.

“These awards are important, vital and a great opportunity to reward your staff for their hard work. They are the backbone of your operation, and being recognised in the Butcher’s Shop of the Year Awards is a great way for you to give them a well-deserved pat on the back.”

The event takes place on 14 November at the Rosewood London Hotel and is sponsored by Eblex, Bpex, Weddel Swift and Harmony Farm, Lucas Ingredients, Verstegen Spices & Sauces and Tican Chilled. A drinks reception is supported by Middleton Foods.
