Northern butcher’s spreads south with latest buy

The South Yorkshire-based Underwood Meat Company has enlarged its portfolio by acquiring St Albans catering butcher’s Butlers.

Obtaining Butlers has allowed Underwood, which has more than 35 years’ experience supplying the catering industry, to strengthen and expand its southern operation, based in Godalming, Surrey.

This is the latest string to Underwood’s bow, after last year acquiring a dedicated sausage production facility in Holmewood, Chesterfield. It later received plaudits at the 2013 Bpex Sausage of the Year competition for a Pork & Chorizo sausage, which it called “a fantastic achievement for the business”.

Katherine Abdy, business development and marketing manager, said: “Underwood has made some significant steps over the last year and continues to explore other avenues for growing the business; including its recent toe-in-the-water within the retail sector, which includes its own online shop”

Underwood is also pleased to announce that it has been awarded with BRC Grade A status for Food Safety following its recent yearly factory audit.

John Heeley, managing director, said: “We are extremely proud to say we are a Grade A factory for Food Safety. The BRC Standard is vital in the way our business operates.”
