Welsh meat body announces scholarship winners

Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) has announced the winners of this year’s HCC Livestock Scholarship.

James Powell, Carwyn James and Eleri Price were given the scholarships at a reception at the Royal Welsh Show. The scholars will travel abroad to spend 4-6 weeks in their chosen destination, studying techniques and practices in lamb, beef or pork production that could be used by producers and processors in Wales.

Lynfa Davies, HCC’s technical development executive, said: “The standard of the applications was very high again this year and some very interesting ideas were presented to the panel.

“James, Carwyn and Eleri displayed a thorough understanding of the industry and we admired their enthusiasm and desire to develop their own businesses and projects. I am sure that they will return from their travels with findings that will also benefit the sector in Wales as a whole.”

James Powell, a sheep and beef farmer from Llanbadarn Fynydd, will investigate the use of marginal land on farms and grassland management in New Zealand and Ireland. Crymych sheep and beef farmer Carwyn James will look at collaborative farming businesses and the potential of share or contract farming, and is heading to Australia and New Zealand. Sheep farmer’s daughter Eleri Price, who is currently completing her PhD thesis at Aberystwyth University, will study genetics, also in Australia and New Zealand.
