Butchers’ Shop of the Year finalists revealed

Butchers throughout the UK are celebrating after being named as finalists in the prestigious Butcher’s Shop of the Year Awards.

The first round of judging is now almost complete and judges will soon be hitting the road to pick out the best businesses in the trade for 2014.

Ed Bedington, editor of Meat Trades Journal, which organises the awards, said: “This year saw a great response and judges had to whittle our finalists down from a strong field of contenders from across the UK.

“It’s a real pleasure to judge these awards and see some of the great businesses out there, and how well the sector is doing. It’s a great window onto the market and how butchers shops throughout the UK are performing.”

The competition covers butcher’s shops up and down the country, with the winner in each region going head-to-head to pick out the best shop in the UK. On top of this, there are also national awards for Farm Shop of the Year, Halal Butcher’s Shop of the Year, Butcher’s Plus, looking at larger operations, and the ever-popular Young Butcher of the Year.

This year also saw the continuation of last year’s new category, New Business of the Year, aimed at recognising a newly established butchery business, set up within the past two years. Bedington said: “We saw a high level of entry into this category which is a really positive sign and one the entire industry should welcome. Seeing more and more new butchery businesses open is a testament to the demand and esteem this ancient craft trade is held in.”

The event takes place on 14 November at the Rosewood London Hotel and is sponsored by Eblex, Bpex, Weddel Swift and Harmony Farm, Lucas Ingredients, Verstegen Spices & Sauces and Tican Chilled. A drinks reception is supported by Middleton Foods.
