Mark Carr, and his pie-making master Zoe Ball, are two aficionados of the pork pie, while the Scots are scouring the country to Identify the best product in Scotland.

On top of this, according to one national newspaper, former Arsenal and England fullback Lee Dixon is getting his teeth into the sector. A partner in the Riverside Brasserie in Bray, Berkshire, Dixon tested some of the typical offerings available at Premiership football grounds.

Covering six teams, including Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Liverpool, Newcastle United - the overall winner was the chunky steak offering from Wigan Athletic.

Dixon said of the winning pie: "From the outside it looks moist and when you turn it over, it looks great." So there you go - that's what former footballers look for in their pies.

But perhaps a more serious point is that according to Manchester United statistics, more than 130,000 meat & potato pies were devoured last season, out of a total of 320,000 savoury pastry products, at its grounds alone.

When it comes to football, the pie remains a firm favourite, and perhaps this is something all local butchers should be looking to tap into?
