New butchery skills contest launched

A national skills competition, which aims to drive excellence in the workplace, will now include a butchery tournament for the first time.

WorldSkills UK’s butchery competition is open to butchers of all ages wanting to demonstrate excellence in the trade.

Organised by Cambrian Training Group on behalf of WorldSkills UK, and supported by an Industry Steering Group, the competition will focus on all the essential skills that are required to be a successful butcher.

“This is the first year that butchery will be included as one of more than 60 skills to feature in the competition,” said Melanie Hughes, market development officer at one of the Steering Group partners' Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales.

“Designed by industry experts, the competition will assess a butcher’s skills and techniques, as well as practical qualities that are important to employers. These include teamwork, time management and working to deadlines.

“We would encourage all butchers to enter WorldSkills UK as it is a fantastic opportunity for them to showcase their talent and raise the profile of a highly-skilled craft.”

The deadline for entries is 20 March 2015.
