The best BBQ products in the country were recognised at the Q Guild BBQ Final in Coventry.

With over 300 entries to the competition, the judges’ work was cut out, but the overall winner on the night was H Clewlow Butchers in Nantwich with its Thai pork medallions. Owner Charles Clewlow said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won this award. We’ve never entered the competition before so to win is overwhelming.”

Clewlow explained to Meat Trades Journal what he thinks set the product apart from the competition. “It’s a cut that’s ideal for the BBQ and is almost impossible to ruin. It’s pork that’s sourced just six miles away from the shop and the look of it is very appealing to customers. Those that have bought it have been coming back for more.”

Shop manager Adrian Spender added: “It’s all very simple elements that work well together and complement each other. There’s nothing too complicated in the process and the product comes together nicely.”
Other winners on the night included Walter Smith Fine Foods, which picked up an amazing four trophies, winning the pork sausage, steak, speciality sausage and speciality burger awards. Moody Sow in Old St.
Mellons won the best beefburger prize. In addition to winning the top award, H Clewlow Butchers won the best speciality BBQ product.

Keith Fisher, one of the judges and butchery development manager at Bpex, praised the high standards of this year’s competition. “There was over 300 products that initially entered and getting them down to the finalists was tough. Even tougher was choosing winners. Whenever I judge competitions like this, I look for the worst product and use that as a baseline for the rest of the competition. However, it was tough to find that worst product as they were all of such good quality.”
