Award-winning Inverclyde butcher Mearns T McCaskie has been awarded membership of the national Butchers Q Guild.

The Wemyss Bay shop, owned by husband and wife Nigel and Helen Ovens, is now recognised as being among the highest-quality butchers in the UK.

In November, Mearns T McCaskie won the Golden Haggis Award and the People’s Choice Award during the celebration of Scotland’s national dish at Oban Distillery while the shop’s products have also landed many Scottish Federation of Meat Traders and Scottish Craft Butchers awards. In 2013 the business was the outright winner of the ‘Butcher’s Plus’ category in the national Butcher’s Shop of the Year Awards, run by Meat Trades Journal.

As well as being the current Scottish Haggis champion and twice Scottish Black Pudding Champion, the business was also chosen as both West of Scotland Pork Sausage and Beef Burger Champion, also adding the Scottish Pork Sausage Reserve Championship to its tally.

It has also won several Great Taste Awards, the world’s largest and most rigorous blind-tasted food awards scheme, organised by The Guild of Fine Food.

Mearns T McCaskie also offers an online ordering service via, through which it sells all meat and meat-related products available from its on-site butchery, bakery and delicatessen, supplying customers all across the UK mainland.

Fellow local Q Guild member, Drew McKenzie, of Robert Alexander Butchers in Port Glasgow, proposed Mearns T McCaskie for membership.

He said: “I warmly welcome them to the Guild. Having both of us in from the one area, albeit at separate ends of Inverclyde, strengthens the brand and the recognition of quality. It shows that the private butcher is the place to shop ahead of the supermarket.”

Nigel Ovens said: “Q Guild membership is another great step forward for us – it’s that stamp of approval which gives people confidence in what we’re doing, a national and international brand of quality that our customers can trust.

“We’re extremely proud of our heritage and remain a family business through and through, sourcing our meat only from specially selected Scottish farmers, with whom we have nurtured and cemented fruitful field-to-plate partnerships over many years. We remain proud to say our meat is ‘reared with passion, matured to perfection and prepared with pride’.”

Gordon Newlands, manager of the Q Guild, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Mearns T McCaskie to the Guild. They are a fine, traditional family butcher’s with a long and proud history behind them – and a long and ever-growing list of high-profile award wins. We know that their quality, dedication and innovation will sit very nicely with our long-held industry-leading values.”
