Some of London’s top chefs were joined by industry professionals to honour Daphne Tilley of Daphne’s Original Welsh Lamb on receiving her MBE.

The event, hosted by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) at London’s Fortnum & Mason, was in celebration of Tilley’s commitment to promoting Welsh Lamb PGI in London.

Speaking of her achievement, Tilley told Meat Trades Journal: “It means so much to me, it makes me quite emotional, both for the family and all of the wonderful friends I’ve made with the chefs in London. They’re such a wonderful crowd.”

While visiting a friend in London, Tilley took the opportunity to approach restaurants in person to see if they would be willing take her on as a supplier. Customers now include Jamie Oliver, Adam Hilliard and Richard Corrigan.

“I think I’ve helped Wales get into London,” said Tilley, who admitted to feeling “very grateful” for her warm reception.

Sue Franklin, UK market development executive for HCC, explained about the role that Welsh Lamb PGI plays in London. “Tonight [Thursday 9 June 2016] was to recruit new members of the Welsh lamb club and to say thank you to Daphne for her contribution to the food industry, especially Welsh lamb.

“Welsh lamb is very much a premium product, in retail and in foodservice, and we just need to get that message across; how premium and how fantastic Welsh lamb is.”

“People recognise Welsh Lamb as being of premium quality.”
