Welsh Lamb showcased at Dutch barbecue fair

Consumers in Holland were fortunate enough to get a taste of PGI Welsh Lamb at the Big Green Egg Flavour Fair this summer.

It was the first time the Welsh meat featured at the event.

Chef and butcher Gerald Smelt, who formerly taught at the SVO butchery school in the Netherlands, prepared two lambs that were barbecued and cooked into casseroles throughout the day.

Welsh Lamb has become increasingly popular in Holland and Germany recently, with its supply to speciality market and fine food suppliers Frische Paradies being expanded last year.

“Welsh red meat is already sold in the Netherlands, and there’s demand there for high-quality food,” said Deanna Leven, export development executive at Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC).

“In particular, we’re exploring how to increase awareness of the brand among high-end foodservice clients, so we were very pleased that our existing partner Frische Paradies was able to showcase Welsh Lamb at the famous Big Green Egg fair.”
