NFMFT names National Barbecue Competition winners

The National Federation of Meat and Food Traders (NFMFT) has crowned the winners of its National Barbecue Competition. 

Over 70 butchers, guests and industry representatives congregated at the NFMFT’s Spring Road Show at Windmill Village Hotel on Wednesday, 15 March to celebrate butchery’s best barbecue products.

Paul Freemantle of Bosworth’s Butchers in Cheylesmore, Coventry was awarded with the traditional pork sausage and BBQ product of the day titles with an ‘Old English sausage’. Meanwhile, Andrew Ringrose, from Broughton Astley in Leicestershire took home five out of the nine awards for a beef burger, kofta kebab, pork speciality sausage, traditional kebab and innovative BBQ product for a ‘Mediterranean skewer kofta’.

Craig Finch of Harborne in Birmingham won meat speciality sausage with an ‘Aussie Lamb sausage’ and Complete Meats’ Shaun Vining of Axminster, Devon, picked up the meat speciality award for his ‘premium steak burger’.

25 competitors and 152 products were judged in a five-hour period by a team of eight judges, with the products cooked by Viv Harvey and Les Smith on barbecues supplied by W R Wright. Head judge and competition adjudicator John Taylor MBE praised the entries “overall quality” of products.

John Mettrick also chaired a ‘Butchers Forum’ where tips and opportunities were discussed and demonstrations and presentations were performed by Angel Refrigeration, A W Smith, Innovative Food Ingredients, Lucas Ingredients, McDonnells and WMA Notionlite.

The awards were sponsored by Leonards, Lucas Ingredients and Innovative Food Ingredients.
