Britain’s best butchers called on to take part in the World Butchers’ Challenge

The most skilled butchers in Britain are being sought after to participate in the World Butchers’ Challenge 2018. 

Tom Wood, who is preparing to open his own business at the beginning of next month, has already been named the team captain. Five other talented butchers are now being encouraged to put their name forward to represent Great Britain as they face off against Australia, New Zealand, France and, for the first time, Ireland. The competition will take place in Belfast between 20 and 22 March 2018.

“The World Butchers’ Challenge is a different form of competition; it’s not just about the important knife or presentation skills, the real challenge is the whole team of six butchers pulling together and successfully executing the task at hand,” Team GB’s manager, Danny Upson, explained to Meat Trades Journal. “It’s all about team work!

“Tom Wood has been given the task as the new Team GB captain. He has plenty of enthusiasm, passion and determination to create a strong team of butchers ready to compete against the French, Irish, Aussies and the Kiwis. Tom was involved in last year’s success where Team GB won the world’s Best Pork Sausage with its pork and cracked black pepper sausages.”

The teams will have to cut and prepare a side of beef, whole lamb and a side of pork in a set amount of time to demonstrate their abilities. Although sponsorship has been secured to cover the team basics, each member will have to make a financial contribution towards their travel costs.
