Butcher’s Shop of The Year 2017 open for entries

Calling all butchers: Meat Trades Journal’s Butcher’s Shop of The Year (BSOTY) 2017, the premier contest for UK butchers, is now open for entries, with a deadline of 7 August.

Do you believe your butcher’s shop is among the best in the land either overall or in one particular area of business? Perhaps you have already won an award from an esteemed butchers group, such as the Q Guild, the National Federation of Meat & Food Traders or the Scottish Craft Butchers. If so, you need to sign up for this competition, which is sponsored by longstanding industry partners HCC - Meat Promotion Wales, Lucas Ingredients, ScobiesDirect.com and Tican Chilled. Middleton Foods is the drinks sponsor for the event.

The core of the event is the regional contest, focused on six key zones: Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, North of England, Midlands & the East of England and South of England. Butchers entering their shops into these categories compete to be the winner in that group and all winners are eligible to claim the one everyone wants: the Butcher’s Shop of The Year crown.

They get to display BSOTY 2017 branding and the resulting increased business that comes with that. Last year’s winner was Walter Rose & Son, based in Devizes, Wiltshire.

In addition to the shop awards, there are several specialist categories for pure-play online meat retailers, Food Halls, Farm Shops and Halal butchers. There is also an Innovation of The Year Award, designed for those who are particularly proud of doing something new or different.

The event is not just open to butchers that have been around a while. Owners and managers of shops that have opened in the past year who want to raise their profile should enter the New Butchery Business of the Year category.

There is also the ever-popular Young Butcher of The Year Award. Male and female butchers aged 18-23 who are already an asset to their business are encouraged to apply to this category, which celebrates the talent and progress of those who represent the future of the industry.

Last year’s awards were held at London’s Banking Hall, at the beating heart of the capital’s financial district. This year they will be presented on Monday, 6 November, at County Hall on the South Bank of the Thames, next to the London Eye. Meat Trades Journal’s publisher William Reed is holding one mammoth event for butchers by holding MTJ’s Champion of Champions, the ultimate sausage contest, at the same venue in the morning, before BSOTY.

This year, we have made the entry process even simpler by allowing competitors to fill in and register their forms purely online, without the need to post paperwork.
