Butcher takes on baker in Scotch pie contest

One of Scotland’s most renowned butchers is to take on a leading Kilmarnock baker in a Scotch pie bake-off today. 

Paul Boyle (pictured, left), of Boghall Butchers in West Lothian, is challenging John Gall (pictured, top) of Brownings the Bakers at Quality Meat Scotland’s (QMS) Scotch Kitchen, a feature at the Royal Highland Show.

The experts, who boast a combined 80 years plus in the industry, will be tasked with producing Scotch pies using either Scotch Beef PGI or Scotch Lamb PGI. The pies will then be judged by chef, Lady Claire Macdonald.

Boyle runs two shops in Boghall and Broxburn, the former having won Meat Trades Journal’s Best Butchers’ Shop in Scotland 2015 at the Butcher's Shop of the Year Awards. Current president of the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders Association, he has previously held the title of World Scotch Pie Champion. However, this position is currently being held by Gall.

“The Scotch Pie Bake-off promises to be one of the highlights of our Scotch Kitchen action at this week’s Royal Highland Show,” commented Graeme Sharp, marketing executive at QMS.

“While there is sure to be lots of good natured banter between our butcher and baker, both are incredibly proud of their Scotch pies and will be very determined to win. The pair will be judged on the taste and appearance of the pies they produce in front of the audience on the stand and the good news is they will be bringing a good supply of pies for show-goers to sample.”

The competition will be commentated on by BBC Radio Scotland presenter Bryan Burnett, with a question-and-answer session for the audience to participate in.
