Always believe in yourself

I had always dreamed that, one day, I ‘d be my own boss and own my own business. But never in my wildest dreams did I think it would come true, certainly after hitting a few barriers in my personal life.

However, I’m fortunate in having someone to look up to. My father, who runs his own successful wholesale business (Bowland Foods), has always given me the desire to never give up, no matter what life throws at you.

Being selected in 2015 for Team GB just gave me that extra kick I needed and reinforced the belief in me that anything is possible when you put your mind to it.

After visiting Australia with the team last year and talking with fellow butchers worldwide, learning how they had become successful, I knew I had to act.

Yet, having three daughters, I faced extra pressure on where to locate the new business, as I never wanted to reduce the quality time I spent with them.

Towards the end of last year, I had a staggering four offers on the table, which I was totally flattered by. I ended up buying Keith Pickup’s business, located in Blackburn, which has been established for 60 years and is a busy company.

My advice to young butchers who want to make the step is ‘do it’; there are so many people within the trade with a wealth of knowledge, who are always willing to help. And always, always believe in yourself!
