Otley butcher named Supreme Champion at pie competition for second time

Geo Middlemiss & Son Butchers has been crowned the Supreme Champion at the 2017 Great Yorkshire Competition in Harrogate for the second time, with its large pork pie.

Peter Middlemiss, whose family has run the business since 1881, picked up the trophy over the weekend. The winning pork pie is a larger version of the small – or traditional – pie, which previously won the Supreme Champion title. Both versions of the pie are available on a daily basis in the shop.

“Size is the only difference between the two pies,” explained Middlemiss. “The large pork pie has exactly the same contents as the smaller version, but in a bigger shell. We have refined our pork pies over many years and are naturally over the moon to have found the winning formula once again this year.”

Middlemiss is a fifth-generation butcher whose ancestor, John Middlemiss, established the butcher’s in nearby Askwith, selling products twice a week at Otley Market.

John passed the business on to his son Walter John, who in turn passed it on to his son George. The butcher’s was then passed on to George’s son Anthony, who continues to run the store with his two sons Peter and Martin. The three family members now run the business alongside two additional colleagues, Daniel Marston and Andrew Barraclough.

“We have a great team and this glowing accolade is a fitting tribute to all the hard graft we put in,” commented Peter.

The overall award, the Ted Jones Supreme Pie Trophy, is named in memory of a former competition stalwart and South Yorkshire butcher who died several years ago.

This is the second time in the competition’s history that it has been part of The Craft Butchers Extravaganza.

In total, 165 individual products were entered into the competition this year, from 30 different entrants from as far north as Durham to down south in Somerset.

Other awards include:

Reserve Pork Pie Champion – Dales Traditional Butchers – small pork pie

Supreme Sausage Champion – W Fletcher & Sons Butchers – rustic Applewood speciality sausage

Reserve Supreme Sausage Champion – Riverside Butchers – thick pork sausage

Speciality Cold Eating Pie Champion – Langs of Wollaston - venison and wild mushroom delight pie
