Sheep sector seeks young ambassadors

The hunt is on for young sheep farmers to represent the industry as part of the National Sheep Association (NSA) Next Generation project.

Individuals aged between 20 and 34 are being encouraged to put themselves forward for the NSA Next Generation Ambassador scheme, which will help develop their skillset and knowledge. The application deadline is Sunday 17 December 2017.

The NSA is looking to recruit 12 people from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to take part in five technical and personal development sessions throughout the year that take place over a two- to three-day period.

The sessions are both practical and tutorial-based and cover themes such as health inputs and cost analyses. They will also include bespoke visits and farm walks on a range of different sheep farming systems.

“I would urge anyone wanting to learn more about the industry alongside like-minded young people to apply for the NSA Next Generation Ambassador programme,” explained Richard Taylor, current NSA Next Generation ambassador.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity and each session gives you so much to take home and think about in relation to your own flock, while giving you confidence to try new ideas.”

Nurturing the industry’s next generation is a major area of focus for the NSA – with activities including training and scholarship signposting, Next Generation Shepherd competitions, job and work experience advertising, alongside the Next Generation ambassadors.

The new group of ambassadors will be the fifth of its kind. Once their term is up, the former ambassadors are encouraged to continue their involvement with the NSA through regional committees or at local and national NSA events.

“I feel as if I’ve learnt so many new skills to enhance my own business, while networking with several influential figures in the sheep sector,” commented existing NSA Next Generation ambassador Dan Pritchard.

“Not to mention the life-long friends I’ve made from all over the UK. I’d highly recommend applying to become an NSA Next Generation ambassador to anyone who is keen to learn more about our fantastic industry.”
